The Ebola virus is spreading very fast in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). At least 930 people have died from the disease. There are now 2,344 confirmed cases. This outbreak is much faster than the last one in 2018. In the past, it took 10 months to reach 2,000 cases. Now, it only took two months. Because of this speed, it is the third-largest Ebola outbreak in history.
The virus started in the Ituri province on May 15. Now, the disease is in five different provinces in the DRC. It has also moved to the country of Uganda. This makes it very hard for doctors to stop the virus. Currently, 724 patients are in hospitals to stay away from others. Doctors are having a big problem because 80 percent of new cases are not on their contact lists. This means the virus is moving through people that doctors do not know about.
There are also other problems in the DRC. In Ituri, healthcare workers are unhappy. They started a strike last week and blocked the entrance to Bunia General Hospital. The workers say they have not received any money for their work since the outbreak began. This strike makes it very difficult to fight the virus. Doctors and nurses are fighting the disease, but they also need help and fair pay. The situation is very difficult for the people in the DRC and Uganda.
