A strong earthquake hit near Kumamoto city. At least 13 people died in the disaster. Many other people had heart problems. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1. The center of the earthquake was 20km south of the city. It was at a depth of 10km. The US Geological Survey measured the magnitude at 6.8. Since the first quake, more than 100 aftershocks have hit the area. This is very dangerous for people and workers.
The earthquake caused much damage. At the Aeon Mall in Kashima, the second floor fell down and exploded. Three people died there. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) says more strong aftershocks could come. These could reach a seismic intensity of 7.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said rescue workers are in a "race against time." They want to save people trapped under broken buildings. About 4,600 workers are helping in the area. The weather is very hot. The temperature is about 35C (95F). This makes the work very hard. Defence Minister Shinjirō Koizumi said that 300 air conditioning units will fly to Kumamoto to help.
Many local people had to leave their homes to stay safe. They are staying in temporary shelters, but they are still afraid. The ground continues to shake. The workers must be very fast, but they must also be safe. A new aftershock could make buildings fall again. The government is working hard to find survivors and help the people in Kumamoto.
