Many rivers in Europe have very low water levels. This is happening because of extreme heat. The River Rhine in Germany and the Netherlands is very low. The Danube and the Po rivers also have little water. This makes it hard to move goods on ships. It also makes it difficult for hydroelectric plants to make electricity.
In Germany, the Low Water Information System (NIWIS) said that at the end of July, 44% of Rhine stations had extremely low water. On the Danube, 78% of stations had extremely low water at the same time. These problems affect the economy because ships cannot carry heavy cargo easily.
Italy is also very hot. Nineteen major cities, like Rome, Milan, Venice, and Naples, have a red alert. This heat comes from North Africa. Officials say almost every major city in Italy will be under a red alert by Monday. Only two cities will be outside the warning zone.
The United Kingdom is also very dry. In southern England, July 2026 was the driest month in nearly 200 years. Now, 40% of the people in England are under a hosepipe ban. This means they cannot use water for gardening. This helps protect the water supply.
Europe is the fastest warming continent on Earth. Temperatures there rise at twice the global average rate. Heat makes water evaporate from the ground and rivers. This creates more droughts. These weather problems affect energy, trade, and water for everyone in Europe.
