New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has a new plan. He wants to open five city-owned grocery stores. This plan will help people because food prices are rising. These stores will give a 30 percent discount on important foods. This includes meat, seafood, milk, and bread. The city will own the supermarkets. The city will also control the prices and the workers. However, private companies will manage the daily work in the stores.
Many shoppers find it hard to buy food because of marketing. Some companies use "healthwashing." This means they use words like "organic" or "high protein" on the package. They do this to make people think the food is healthy. People often pay more money for these items. This happens because of the "health halo effect." If a person sees one healthy word, they think the whole product is good. This is not always true.
There is also a problem with information. Companies know everything about the ingredients, but customers do not. They only see the front of the box. A study by researchers at UC Davis showed this problem. They tested 54 products that said they had only avocado oil. The results were surprising. 89 percent of the products had other oils inside. One product had no avocado oil at all. This shows that some companies are not honest. The Mayor wants to use these new stores to make healthy food cheaper for all families in the city.
