The UK government wants to change its rules for electric cars. Right now, the law says 80% of new car sales must be electric by 2030. The government is thinking about lowering this target to 50%. They are asking for opinions from the public until late October. This is a difficult choice for the country. The government wants to help the environment, but car companies are worried about money.
The current rule is called the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate. This rule says the number of electric cars must grow every year. For example, 33% of new car sales must be electric in 2026. The target will then go up every year until it reaches 80% in 2030. If the government changes the target to 50%, the other 50% of new cars could be hybrid vehicles. Another idea is to keep the 80% target but give companies more time until 2034. However, the government will still ban petrol and diesel cars after 2030.
Car companies say the rules are too hard. They say they must sell electric cars at very low prices to meet the rules. This makes it difficult for them to make money. They warn that if the rules do not change, some factories might close and many people could lose their jobs. Even though electric car sales in the UK grew by 29% this year, the industry is still worried. Environmental groups are also worried. They say lower targets will increase carbon dioxide pollution in the UK. The government must now decide between helping the economy or helping the environment.
